Convoy supports Mummy’s Wish
25 July, 2025
The i98 Illawarra Convoy provided $20,000 in support of Mummy's Wish program. Mummy's Wish is part of Rare Cancers Australia. Founded in 2007, Mummy’s Wish is a national Australian charity dedicated to supporting mothers undergoing cancer treatment, who have young children. In April 2024, the organisation became a program of Rare Cancers Australia to expand its reach and resources, ensuring continued support for these families.
A cancer diagnosis is devastating for anyone, but when you are a mum, the impact is even more profound. For mums in this situation, often some of their first thoughts are about the practicalities – how to tell the kids, who will care for the children while they’re having treatment, how they’ll keep up with their usual tasks around the house, and whether they’ll see their children grow up.
Many are forced to juggle treatment with parenting, often without adequate support. They may face physical exhaustion, emotions distress, and financial strain, particularly if they are a single parent, live rurally or already face disadvantage. Simple tasks like cooking, cleaning, or explaining cancer to a child become overwhelming.
The Mummy’s Wish program exists to fill this gap – providing essential practical and emotional support so that mothers can focus on recovery while maintaining stability at home.
Our assistance includes domestic cleaning, meal delivery, transport and utility support, babysitting – ensuring mums have access to everyday necessities while they focus on treatment and recovery.
Every mum that comes into our care has a dedicated Patient Support Co-ordinator who is available for emotional support and clinical support to help navigate their cancer experience.
Each mum receives a tailored care pack that includes age-appropriate books to explain their illness to young children in a gentle, and reassuring way. The books help explain to their children what cancer is, what will happen to mum such as hospital visits or losing their hair, and to encourage them to talk about their emotions. Also included is a comfort bear with a voice recorder so mums can leave message for their children, often cherished in families facing a terminal diagnosis.
Mummy’s Wish Program gives families the tools and support they need to function during an incredibly vulnerable time – reducing stress, maintaining dignity, and preserving the vital connection between mother and her children during cancer treatment.
We believe every mother who is diagnosed with cancer should feel supported so they can be there for their family. The overall support offered by Mumy’s Wish gives the gift of time to mums with cancer so they can focus on what is important – being a mum
